Within some counselling practices, therapists use the stone counselling technique. Stones, pebbles, shells and a tray of sand are used as tools which can provide profound results during therapy.
Person Centred therapy focuses on the unspoken emotions, which are sometimes difficult for the client to express verbally. However, the use of stone therapy may help them to overcome any emotional barriers and defence mechanisms. As the stones are placed in the sand or just onto a solid surface the client will start to subconsciously create a picture of the discussed topic. The stones may start to represent certain situations, that are easier for them to explain visually, and explore further verbally. Relationships that have been depicted, can provide surprising insights, as can the choice of the objects chosen.
